'Turning the screw' is an expression that dates to the Inquisition, as torturers literally turned a screw into the limbs of their victims to extract a confession. The reader of James' story has been primed to believe that the ghosts the governess believes in are real.

While inspired by The Romance of Certain Old Clothes, Viola never becomes the lady in the lake in that story and she does not appear in The Turn of the Screw either.

Miles asserts that he wants a different environment with such serenity that the governess throws herself onto him with embraces. Miles lets her kiss him, then tells her to “let [him] alone.” The governess again tries to pry from him the reason for his expulsion.

However, though the conclusion of The Turn of the Screw is as ambiguous as its prologue, what seems apparent is a romantic love that exists between the governess and her charge, Miles.

At the end of Turn of the Screw it is theorized by many sources that the Governess literally molested Miles when he finally begins to admit seeing Peter Quint. This action is symbolized by him collapsing into her arms, while she is trying to save him from Peter Quint.

It's revealed that Peter suffered abuse at the hands of his father. Although Peter never explicitly says that it was sexual, it's impossible to misconstrue that Peter's father was a pedophile.
